Top 10 African countries with the lowest diesel prices

A recent report by Business Insider Africa revealed a list of African countries that recorded the lowest diesel prices during June 2025, at a time when global energy prices continue to experience significant fluctuations due to geopolitical crises and volatility in the global oil market.

Despite these circumstances, several countries on the continent managed to maintain low diesel prices, providing real relief for their economies and citizens who face growing living challenges, especially in the transport, industry, and agriculture sectors, which heavily rely on this fuel.

North Africa Leads the Scene

According to the report, North African countries topped the rankings, with Libya, Algeria, and Egypt among the countries offering the lowest diesel prices on the continent.

According to GlobalPetrolPrices data adopted in the report, prices were as follows:

  • Libya: $0.028 per liter, which is among the lowest prices globally, not only on the continent.
  • Algeria: $0.354 per liter, thanks to government subsidies and abundant local production.
  • Egypt: $0.379 per liter, amid ongoing government efforts to regulate fuel prices and provide subsidized rates for citizens.

In southern Africa, Angola was among the countries that maintained low diesel prices, with a liter priced at approximately $0.328, reflecting its role as one of Africa’s major oil producers and its benefit from abundant local production in reducing the cost of petroleum products.

Libya… The Lowest Price Despite the Challenges

Despite the complex political situation Libya has been experiencing for years, the abundance of its oil resources and the continuation of government fuel subsidies have enabled it to record the lowest diesel price in Africa, and among the lowest globally.

This factor plays a significant role in supporting the Libyan economy, as low diesel prices reduce transportation and production costs, which is reflected in the prices of goods and services and alleviates the living burdens on citizens.

However, energy experts have simultaneously warned that the continuation of these low prices depends on maintaining stable oil production and developing the energy sector infrastructure, especially in light of the political crises that still cast a shadow over the country.

Significant Price Disparities Across the Continent

The figures reveal significant disparities in diesel prices between countries across the continent, with the price gap between Libya, which has the lowest price, and Zimbabwe, which tops the list with the highest price, exceeding $1.35 per liter. This reflects the differences in economic policies, the reality of local production, and the extent of government support in each country.

At a time when African countries are striving to contain the global energy crisis, providing affordable fuel remains a major challenge for African governments, given its direct impact on the daily lives of citizens and the future of economic growth in their countries.

Fuel prices are expected to continue fluctuating in the coming months amid ongoing global crises, making it essential for policymakers and citizens alike to closely monitor these indicators.
